Legendary Powers D4

Legendaries should fundamentally change the gameplay of abilities, and that’s exactly the approach we’re taking in Diablo IV. The best way to illustrate this is to review a few powers we’ve worked on for the Sorceress skill Teleport.

One Legendary might increase your defense shortly after you Teleport, making it a great defensive escape tool. Another might increase your damage for a short period of time after you Teleport, making you more likely to want to jump into the fray. Still another removes the Teleport cooldown entirely, but now sends you in a random direction, so you have high, but unpredictable mobility. Lastly, we have a power that adds a burst of area damage to enemies upon your arrival.

Combining all these Legendaries can result in some pretty wild and satisfying results, and it’s up to you (and perhaps a little luck) to decide which ones to combine.

Legendary Aspects & Legendary Powers

Legendary Aspects can be imprinted on Rare and Legendary items at the Occultist. After imprinting:

  • Rare items turn into Legendaries with the affixes that were previously on that item, plus the newly added Legendary Power.
  • Legendaries have their existing Legendary Power overwritten with the new one.

Codex of Power Aspects can be applied indefinitely. Regularly extracted Legendary Aspects are consumed when they are imprinted onto an item. An item can only be imbued once!

Limitations

You have an opportunity to go and basically override the existing legendary power on this and put in the new power they’ve just collected to the Codex of Power. So in this way, players get this deterministic way to kind of collect a series of these legendary powers that are out there in the game for them to find. But it’s not all of them.

  • You can only find some of the legendary powers overall in the game. There are over 120 dungeons in the game. So this represents like a lot of really exciting and interesting things for you to collect as you’re going through these areas.
  • Also, you don’t just find legendary powers for your class. You’ll find legendary powers for all of the class as you go. And some ones that can work in multiple classes as. And then we think this is really cool because every time you find an aspect that you can put in your Codex of Power, this is now available to all characters in that realm.
  • But another limitation for the Codex of Power, in addition to not actually having the ability to collect all of legendary powers again, there’s many, many more for you to find as you’re playing through Diablo IV those powers also are always rolled at the lowest level of power possible. So it is always better for you to go find a legendary item that has the power that you’re interested in, and then you could choose to use that item directly or extract the power from that item into an aspect crystal. Then go in and print into your own item of your choosing.

Legendary and Unique Powers

Legendary Powers exist on Legendary items, and Unique Powers exist on Unique items. These can be generic (for every build), category-specific and skill-specific. Some examples follow:

  • General Legendary Powers
    • Enemies hit with Basic Skills increases the damage of your next Core Skill by x20.0%, up to x50%.
  • Class-Specific Legendary Powers
    • Sorceress: Each time Chain Lightning bounces off you, gain 6 Mana.
  • General Unique Powers
    • Lucky Hit: Up to a 25% chance to Freeze enemies for 2 seconds.
According to the developers, there will be no huge damage multipliers for skills as Legendary affixes and two to three regular affixes are equivalent in power to a Legendary affix on most items.
